Video Media in the Classroom
Video Media in the Classroom
There are several reasons why a teacher might show a piece of video media in a classroom. These include, but are not limited to:
- Classroom celebrations
- Rewards for academic or behavioral achievements
- To enhance or augment in-class learning
Cedar Park staff use video content created or vetted by Seattle Public School departments like Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction or Native Education in various lessons throughout the year.
On occasion staff will use non-SPS video content to enhance a lesson or to celebrate an achievement. Staff members follow the below protocols before screening a movie or video:
- Pre-Screen each video/movie in its entirety to verify it is appropriate for the age-level &/or learning target
- Thoughtfully watch for problematic or controversial content, especially in older movies or videos that were considered G rated at the time of their release
- Consider whether the extra screen time actually enhances the celebration or lesson and if other hands-on activities could be an engaging and acceptable alternative
- Communicate ahead of time with families if there is a plan to show a PG rated movie so that families have the option to opt out
